Image of the Week

waterski girls.jpg

Well, considering it’s the end of Summer next week, I thought I would go out with a great Summer kind of image.

I love this pic. Looking at this I can’t help but picture some 60′s Florida tourist trap. Bunch of New Yorkers standing around the banks of some shore outside of Tampa Bay. Swilling beer from plastic cups. Sitting in bleachers overlooking the water. Wearing Bermuda shorts, Black socks and sandals, Palm tree print shirt, and a straw hat loudly, whooping it up as bathing beauties ski by in various acrobatic poses. Women in big glasses, bigger hair and floral print dresses filling out their postcards to the family and friends sweating it out in back in Brooklyn. Wish you were here!

or if I look a little harder I hear this…

Eyvind Earle 1916-2000.

Very graphic. Very cool. I love this highly stylized look.

He started his career in the 30′s but is mostly known for painting for Disney for 15 years. His work as Production Designer and background painter for “Sleeping Beauty” is instantly recognizable. The majority of his works are highly graphic landscapes. For inspiration he was really into the Central Coast of California, and if you are familiar with the region, it shows in most his work.

Just sharing.

Elvis stamp.jpg

Ah… the year was 1992 a simpler time. We didn’t have American Idol And every assclown with a cellphone texting his vote in for the singer of the week. No we had scores of idiots lined up at the post office to vote on their favorite Elvis stamp. Would it be fat, bloated, rhinestone Elvis? Or slim, hunky, sharkskin suit, fifties Elvis. Well no shit the American populous voted overwhelmingly for the skinny version.

Going through my cache of crap I ran across this cartoon by then co-worker and friend of mine Rick Leddy. Great cartoonist who did stuff for L.A. Weekly and other publications in the L.A. area. I immediately laughed my ass off remembering him passing Xerox copies of this cartoon out to everyone at work trying to explain why this should be the stamp of choice for discerning Americans nationwide.

It’s been 16 years passing but I still can’t help but think that Rick was way ahead of the curve.
