Jan 67.jpg

This week is a mystery. Couple of years ago I was doing some global newsgroup searches looking for reference photographs. I ran acoss a posting of 5 scans from a photo album, one of which is the pic this week. I don’t know who this is. I don’t know where it was taken. All I know, as you can see, is that it was taken in January of 1967. So who is this beautiful young woman? Where is this beach, seen below her, located at? All I can do is come up with some imaginary background for her and why she is there. I will keep my speculative thoughts to some fanciful story written to suit my mood. Sometimes tragic love story. Sometimes the independent woman’s travel story of self discovery.

What did you come up with?

Sex sells. Well they obviously thought so on this 60 year old produce crate label. Although how that works for vegetables I’m not sure. You do see a bunch of them from this era like this. Double entendre names with pin-up illustrations. As far as a pin-up illustration it’s fine, but to sell produce it seems a tad ridiculous. As far as the blown up dress theme, common with the pin-ups of the day, this one is a little exaggerated. If not for her arms through the sleeves it would be gone. Is she visiting the shore during gale force winds? The beach umbrella in the background lead me to believe not. But the artist gets kudos for being clever on using said dress to place all the pertinent vegetable company info. Oh well, trying to find logic in these illustrations was not the point, case and point look at any Art Frahm pin-up. Better yet see for yourself at James Lileks Art Frahm pages here (seriously check it out it’s hysterical).

Teenagers from Outer Space.jpg

I love this movie. It has all the ridiculous 50′s sci-fi schlock you come to expect from this kind of flick. It doesn’t disappoint. “…one moment later-a skeleton.” is a scene of such hysterics its awesome. Bathing girl climbs out of a pool only to be zapped by a alien hoodlum who watches a smoking skeleton fall back into the water. A dog earlier in the movie is dispatched with a similar conclusion. The great part about both these scenes is the smoking skeletons are clearly wired together like the specimens you see in any anatomy class. This, for some reason to me at least, is far more entertaining than any CGI hyper-realistic ray-gun blasting I have ever seen in any movie made in the last 20 years. But I’m weird that way.

This week is a photo that has much more of a story than any of the other ones I have posted. I originally posted this on my Facebook page 3 weeks ago to share the story with some friends. It was received as such a funny tale I thought I would share with everyone else. So here it is lifted straight from my Facebook page as posted.

Okay had a odd thing happen today. About 5 months ago I got an email from a guy wanting to get permission to use a photo I had shot for a CD cover and merch for a band he was managing. He had seen it on a web site I have where I post images for people to use for what ever purpose they want, gratis. here is the pic in question

(see above)

They wanted to use it, but altered, and were not sure if they needed permission but thought it fair to check with me either way. I told him I post this stuff for free for people to use as they see fit. When I get these requests I usually just ask for a sample or link to what they did because I get a kick out of seeing what others have done with something I posted. He responded by saying I was the greatest and he would send me a CD when they were printed. Now I will tell you I had forgotten about this email and assumed it would be some small pressing of Buffalo Bob and his Kazoo marching band or some other crap.

Then about 2 weeks ago I got an email saying they had my CD and just needed an address. So I fired off an email of thanks along with my info. Well tonight I come home from work and there is a package in the mail slot with my CD inside. This is the CD I recieved

Day and Age.jpg

I was a little shocked as you could imagine. But I sent him an email thanking him for holding up his end of the deal. I must admit they were beyond cool even asking for permission considering how much they adapted the photo.

Well that’s it in a nut shell. Not everyday one of my photos gets used as the basis of a major label top 40 bands album cover. On a side note, after emailing them, they also offered me guest list tickets for when they play here in April. If anything it makes for a good bar story.

Damn pathetic.

What the hell one post in February? Okay so I was busy. Work has been exhausting and home life has been hectic. But what was I doing with my scant free time during the month. Well, everyone insisted I get a Facebook account. “you have a lot of friends on there.” they said. “It will give you a chance to reconnect with old friends.” they said. Nobody said that it has an addictive quality about it somewhere between cigarettes and black tar heroin. Moderation that’s the key. Check it once a day, make a couple notes, then move on with your life. Well in theory it sounds good.

Okay I got some new band pics to post today and a Image of the Week so lets see if I can get my act together and post this stuff. I also was working last month on some overall site design tweaks maybe I can get those finished also. Boy am I optimistic.
