Well I have laid low for the last month and it’s time to return. Part of my self-imposed exile was too much work at work, cutting into my lunchtime posting. And at home, when I normally would just sneak off some posts before bedtime, all my computer time has been relegated to the transition to Windows 7. Yes I took the dive and it’s been a little painful. I was no fan of Vista. I had been holding dear to my copy of XP pro and enjoying every minute of it. But I was starting to experience some difficulty with newer software not really written for XP (I’m talking to you CS4). Between that and a couple updates to install from WordPress my extracurricular computer activities have been somewhat hampered. Well no more. It’s time to get back in the saddle. So to kick things off I finally posted the entire “Romance Panel” project in it’s entirety on one page. All 30 images. Just look to the sidebar to find it.
As far as Windows 7 is concerned. There are some features that are a welcome improvement from XP. The built-in search bar in the menu works nicely and doesn’t feel the need to do it with a talking paperclip. The networking and sharing features are much easier than it’s predecessor. And it also seems to work faster, and multitask better, with multiple core processors than XP ever did.
Now a word of note I am using 7 Pro, so not sure if there is a huge discrepancy between them like there was in XP Home and Pro. From what I have seen in the Vista Home versions we have at work I would say its negligible at best.
On the down side, if you are going from XP, like I did, instead of Vista, it’s a complete overhaul. There is no upgrade option to overwrite XP it’s a reformat and load from scratch affair. Now as much of a bitch as this is, not to even mention epically time consuming, the silverlining is that you probably needed a good gutting anyway if your still running XP. I know , I know, it sounds like I am telling you I really needed to be reminded about my unsafe driving in order to help keep me and my family safe. After I just received a $200 speeding ticket. But lets face it your gonna have to do it eventually.
As far as using it my only real complaint is, unfortunately, a major one. Stop trying to save me from my self. It always needs to let you know if it’s safe to do, or if you want to do it anyway what horrible risks you are taking, or just not give me the permissions to do it because it knows I am just going to screw things up anyway. And this is on a full administrator account. It’s asinine. At least give me a option to turn it off. It makes doing things painfully slow and frustrating if you are trying to do anything outside of using the files in your documents folder.
One other complaint is instead of just the documents folder, which was fine, you now have your documents, and your favorites, and if you use anything a lot, a library folder. So know you have multiple shortcuts for the same file residing in a handful of different folders. Did anyone really need this. This was put in for the idiots who constantly save files and have no idea where they saved them to. I’m looking at most of you I know. Functions like this complicate the OS in the name of simplicity. That’s stupid.
And finally the Start menu sucks. But I will cut it slack just because I may not have found how to tweak it yet. And hey the same might go for the other complaints to.
Unfortunately because these are the things pissing me off right now this is coming off like a slam on the whole thing and it’s not meant to be. There is a lot of good in there it’s just not preoccupying my thoughts like the irritants are. And hey you Mac folk, don’t get cocky. I have almost always had both and I laugh at Apple commercials flogging Windows. Apple has not got a spotless record on OS releases either. I remember buying the first OSX releases and they still had to give you 9.2.2 with it so you could actually use your computer for more than a door stop.
Alright enough of my blathering. Tonight will be a new post and I think I will be starting a new series this week “Snapshots of Exploitation”. Sounds titillating doesn’t it?
Masto.
