Elvis stamp.jpg

Ah… the year was 1992 a simpler time. We didn’t have American Idol And every assclown with a cellphone texting his vote in for the singer of the week. No we had scores of idiots lined up at the post office to vote on their favorite Elvis stamp. Would it be fat, bloated, rhinestone Elvis? Or slim, hunky, sharkskin suit, fifties Elvis. Well no shit the American populous voted overwhelmingly for the skinny version.

Going through my cache of crap I ran across this cartoon by then co-worker and friend of mine Rick Leddy. Great cartoonist who did stuff for L.A. Weekly and other publications in the L.A. area. I immediately laughed my ass off remembering him passing Xerox copies of this cartoon out to everyone at work trying to explain why this should be the stamp of choice for discerning Americans nationwide.

It’s been 16 years passing but I still can’t help but think that Rick was way ahead of the curve.

Another one of those great ideas that the future seamed surely to hold for all of suburbia. Right up there with a heli-pad and built in entryway storage for the family’s jet packs. The 50′s and 60′s were all about all the cool stuff coming to you soon, thanks to technology. This is one that seems so doable, and is, until you realize you could build 10 pools for the cost of the 8 inch+ glass panels you would need to hold back 40,000 gallons of water.

Just think you could keep an eye on junior while he swims and still sit in the comfort of your living room and watch the ball game. And if junior wants to take 5 while playing Marco Polo he could catch a couple “at bats” with out leaving the pool. It’s perfect!

I also dig the remote siting on the coffee table. One of those old school ones. Giant plastic box with 2 rocker switches on the top. Not quite the stylish fetish object as say, the iPod.

See you in the future.

Stop Rest Cafe.jpg

I love finding this stuff on the side of the road out in the middle of nowhere. This particular sign was outside of Florence Arizona. The “Stop Rest Cafe” doesn’t look like it’s been in business for a while. The building was all boarded up about 30 yards behind this sign (like I needed that extra clue to figure out this place wasn’t in business). It’s more like the “Rest in Peace Cafe”. There is a lot of abandoned stuff out by Florence, which is better known for the nearby state penitentiary, gas stations, homes, cars, apartment complexes, and the occasional cafe.

Here we go again, or launch 4.0

As usual what started as a quick revamp and data base upgrade turned into a major overhaul and reloading of all the source code. Upgrading the code wiped my data base so it’s ground zero for mailhiot.com once again. Well at least I got it all worked out this time and got an itch to roll along with it. I was doing some work to it so I could get back on that horse, and start posting again, even though I was a little perturbed in the fact I was having some issues with it. Well good news is in wiping everything, I got it all working. So that’s the silver lining. Look for tons of stuff coming soon to an interweb near you. I did lose all my previous posts except the last. So we will start with the last post on mailhiot.com 3.0 as you see it below. I will probably throw some of the old “Images of the Week” back up just because I like them. And a couple of you did also.

tiger skin girl.jpg

I must confess I much prefer the pin-ups of old to today’s. But I have to wonder what the appeal was supposed to be for a broad on a skin rug? Was this some kind of ceremonial totem that our forefathers needed to do the deed? I don’t remember seeing a “copulation skin” anywhere in our house or my grandparents for that matter. Maybe it’s one of those things that the original context has been long forgotten. Which means now we just get to endlessly poke fun at the whole idea.

PS. If you’re like me and for some strange reason looking at the above photo makes you start humming “The Look of Love” …this ones for you.
