Years ago, I went looking for a sunset image to use as the desktop background on my computer at work. A Google image search returned somewhere around two million choices, which seemed like roughly 1,999,970 too many. So rather than choose one, I decided to make my own—about thirty stripped-down graphic sunsets built from simple gradients and horizontal bands of color.

I shared them with friends and posted them on an earlier version of the site, partly because I liked how they turned out and partly because the whole exercise amused me. They are all more or less representations of the same thing: sky, horizon, fading light, and the end of another day. Now I’m posting them again, one at a time, slowly subjecting everyone to the entire collection. Maybe somebody will find one they enjoy—or at least appreciate the questionable logic of solving an excess of sunset images by creating thirty more.
